What Is uPVC Cladding and Why Is It So Popular?
uPVC, or Unplasticised Polyvinyl Chloride, cladding is made up of interlocking plastic boards that are fixed to the external walls of a building to create a decorative and protective outer layer. Unlike traditional timber cladding, uPVC does not require painting, varnishing or polishing. Maintenance is minimal, usually limited to an occasional clean with warm soapy water. It is easy to see why uPVC cladding has become such a popular choice among homeowners.
Some of the key benefits of uPVC cladding include:
Weather resistance – uPVC is unaffected by rain, frost and ultraviolet exposure, making it ideal for year round protection.
No rotting or warping – unlike timber, uPVC will not rot or warp, helping to prevent long term structural damage.
Colour stability – whichever colour you choose, the panels are designed to retain their appearance for years without noticeable fading.
Cost effective – uPVC is typically far more affordable than timber and many other cladding materials.
Suitable for DIY installation – our uPVC panels are designed to fit together neatly, making installation straightforward for capable home improvers.
Planning Your uPVC Cladding Installation
When it comes to fitting your cladding panels, the key starting point will be to ensure you have the correct measurements, this will be the key to how well your panels fit. Measure the total surface area you wish to cover in square meters then select the size and number of panels you need. It is important to always allow a small percentage for wastage and cutting around any particular edges or doors and windows.
Tools and Materials You Will Need
Tools
Tape measure, pencil, and chalk line
Circular saw or mitre saw
Jigsaw – this will be needed for cutting around obstacles, pipework, or irregular shapes
Stainless steel or galvanised fixing nails or screws
Exterior grade sealant in a matching colour
How to Install uPVC Cladding: Step-by-Step
Step 1 — Prepare the Surface
The surface you are applying the cladding to must be smooth and free from cracks, damage or damp. It is also essential that the wall is structurally sound before installation begins. Taking the time to prepare the surface properly will help ensure a secure and long lasting finish.
Step 2 – Fix the starter trim
The starter trim should be fixed horizontally along the very bottom of the cladding area. This trim supports the lower edge of the first board and ensures that installation begins perfectly level. Take care to check your spirit level regularly, as even a small inaccuracy at this stage can affect the alignment of the remaining boards.
Step 3 — Install Corner and Surround Trims
The first stage of installation is to ensure that all corner trims, as well as window and door trims, are securely fitted. These trims contain channels into which the cladding boards will slide, so it is important to install them before fitting any boards.
As with the starter trim, use a spirit level to make sure everything is perfectly aligned. Accurate fitting at this stage will make the rest of the installation process much smoother and help achieve a professional finish.
Step 4 — Begin Fitting the Cladding Boards
Slide the bottom edge of your first cladding board into the starter trim and push it up firmly. Fasten the top edge of the board at each wall fixing point.
Continue working upwards, interlocking each successive board into the one below. Our uPVC cladding profiles are designed to seamlessly fit together, allowing for easy and smooth fitting.
Step 5 — Cut Around Openings
When you reach windows or doors, measure carefully and cut boards to fit snugly into the surrounding trim channels. A circular saw or mitre saw makes clean, straight cuts through uPVC with minimal effort, while a jigsaw handles curved cuts around pipework or other obstacles. Always wear eye protection when cutting.
Step 6 — Fit the Top Edge Trim
At the top of your cladding run finishing trims to conceal the cut edges of the uppermost boards and provide a neat, weatherproof finish. Ensure this is fixed firmly and apply a exterior sealant to any gap between the trim and adjacent surfaces such as a soffit board or wall.
Step 7 — Seal All Joints and Gaps
Use a matching exterior-grade sealant around all trim junctions, particularly at the top of the installation, around every window and door opening. Sealant is critical for preventing water ingress behind the cladding.
How Long Does uPVC Cladding Last?
Quality uPVC cladding, when correctly installed, can last between 30 and 40 years with very little ongoing maintenance required. A simple wash with warm soapy water and a soft bristled brush is usually enough to keep the surface looking clean and fresh year after year.
How much does it cost to clad a house yourself?
The cost of uPVC cladding will depend on the style you choose and the size of the area you are covering. Our external cladding panels are competitively priced and available in a wide range of styles including shiplap cladding and double embossed wall cladding in a variety of colour options. For a DIY project, this compares very favourably with professionally installed alternatives such as fibre cement or hardwood cladding.
