Composite decking is a fantastic choice for creating an ideal, low maintenance outdoor space. If you have recently invested in our fantastic range of composite decking then it is important to understand some key, aftercare points. Although composite decking is generally a low maintenance option, cleaning and care is still required to ensure that your decking remain in the best condition possible.
Why Clean Composite Decking?
Although composite decking has been designed to be a low maintenance, long lasting option in comparison to wooden decking, cleaning and care still matters:
- Weather Exposure – As with anything outdoors, your composite decking will naturally be prone to weather damage. Although highly water resistant, harsh rain, snow or ice can leave decking looking dull, create standing stains, and build up of mould or mildew.
- Dirt Build Up – Falling leaves, mud and even food and drink spills can build up and cause staining and even make the boards slippery.
- Maintain Appearance – Composite decking is designed to be more longer lasting and durable however it is still important to regularly clean your decking to maintain its appearance and maintain the longevity.
What Tools do You Need?
Cleaning composite decking is easy and can be done using what you already have in the home:
- Broom to clear dirt and fallen leaves
- Garden Hose for rinsing
- Washing up liquid – warm soapy water is generally enough to clean decking.
If you find you do have any stubborn stains, specialist cleaner can be used alongside a jet wash, if stated in your warranty and guidelines.
Cleaning Your Decking: Top Tips
With regular upkeep, cleaning your decking shouldn’t take much time:
- Clear the decking off any furniture, ensure you have an empty space to clean
- Brush away leaves and any dirt that may have built up
- Use a hose to rinse of any surface level dirt
- Use soapy water to restore the original state of the decking – if there are stains that cannot be shifted with this, then consider a specialist cleaner but check any guidelines before doing this.
- Other solutions in your kitchen cupboards (vinegar, baking soda) are considered a great solution for most cleaning tasks but in the case of composite decking, these may cause more damage so if you are using these, start by testing a small area and working quickly.
- If there is any build up of mould build up, you may need to use a specialist cleaning solution.
- Ensure you clean thoroughly. Cleaning solutions, especially vinegar or other household products, can cause damage if left too long, making it important to ensure you rinse quickly and thoroughly with water.
- Regular maintenance is important to ensure that there is no build up or no stubborn stains. By regularly maintaining your composite decking, whenever you come to clean, it should be quick and easy every time.
Cleaning twice a year is considered standard and should ensure your decking remains in good condition. It is important however to consider the location of your decking, if directly under trees you may find dirt and build up occurring more often and therefore frequent cleaning is needed.
