How many decking boards do I need?

Each 3600 x 140mm board covers roughly 0.5m², so divide your deck area by 0.5 and add 5 to 10 per cent for cuts and waste. Order the bullnose edge boards, fascia, joists and clips at the same time — the board count is usually the easy part, and it is the trim that gets forgotten.

How is composite decking fixed down?

With hidden clips that sit between the boards and screw into the joist below, so there are no screw heads showing through the deck face. Clips also set a consistent expansion gap between boards, which composite needs — the material moves more with temperature than timber does.

What goes underneath composite decking?

A level, well-drained substructure of joists at 400mm centres, supported off a solid base and with a clear gap underneath for air to move. Composite is not structural — it spans between joists and no further. Ventilation under the deck matters as much as the frame itself.

Does composite decking need sealing or staining?

No. There is no sanding, staining, oiling or sealing — the colour goes through the board rather than sitting on top as a finish. A wash down with soapy water and a stiff brush once or twice a year keeps it clean and clears the gaps between boards.

Will exterior cladding fade in sunlight?

Exterior-grade boards are made with UV stabilisers and hold their colour far better than a painted timber equivalent, which needs redoing every few years. Very dark shades on a south-facing elevation will shift more over time than a pale one. Interior wall panels are not UV stabilised and should not be used outside.

Choosing Composite Decking

Why composite over timber

A timber deck needs sanding and re-oiling most years and still greys, splinters and eventually rots at the joist contact points. Composite is a wood-fibre and polymer blend that holds its colour, does not splinter, and needs washing rather than treating. The trade-off is upfront cost against a decade of upkeep.

Working out the order

Each 3600 x 140 x 25mm board covers about 0.5m², so divide the deck area by 0.5 and add 5 to 10 per cent for cuts. Then add the parts people forget: bullnose edge boards for the visible edges, fascia to close the frame, joists, and clips at roughly 20 per square metre on 400mm centres.

Getting the base right

Joists at 400mm centres on a level, well-drained base, with airflow underneath. Composite moves with temperature, so leave the expansion gaps the clips set rather than closing boards up tight. Available in black, brown and anthracite grey.
