Downpipes

Downpipes carry water from the gutter to a drain or soakaway at the base of the wall. Plastic downpipe comes in 68mm round and 66mm square to match the guttering profile, in 2.5m, 4m and 5.5m lengths, with bends, offsets and shoes to complete the run, held to the wall by gutter clips.

Choosing Downpipes

Matching the gutter

The downpipe has to match the outlet on the gutter, so settle the gutter profile first. 68mm round pairs with half round and deep flow, 66mm square goes with square and ogee, and cast iron effect systems use a narrower 65mm square to keep the period proportions.

Lengths and fittings

2.5m, 4m and 5.5m lengths. Offset bends step the pipe back to the wall under the eaves, branches let two runs join before they reach the drain, and a shoe at the bottom throws water clear over a gully instead of into the brickwork.

Fixing

A clip within 150mm of every socket joint, then roughly every 1.8m to 2m, with an extra either side of an offset. Flush-fitting clips where the pipe has to sit tight to a boundary or passage wall.
