Fascia Boards
Fascia boards carry the guttering along the eaves and close the gap above the wall, taking the weather off the rafter ends. uPVC fascia comes in 9mm capping and 16mm replacement thicknesses at 3m and 5m, in widths from 100mm to 405mm. To cover sound existing timber instead, see fascia capping.

Frequently Asked Questions
9mm board is capping: it is fixed over sound existing timber to smarten the roofline without stripping back. 16mm is the full replacement thickness, strong enough to carry the guttering on its own once the old timber is off. If the timber behind is soft or rotten, capping over it only hides the problem.
Through into the rafter ends with polytop nails or stainless screws, two per rafter, at the top and bottom of the board so it cannot rotate under the weight of a full gutter. Fix into sound timber — if the rafter ends are soft they need cutting back and a new timber before the board goes on.
A pitched roof needs continuous airflow at the eaves, so unless ventilation comes from somewhere else — over-fascia vents or a ventilated ridge — the soffit should be vented. Hollow soffit has the gap built into each joint. Flat soffit is unvented, so pair it with a vent strip or circular vents.
They do not have to, but a roofline reads as one line from the ground, so mismatched whites or a grey gutter on a white fascia tend to show. If you are replacing in stages, settle the colour across fascia, soffit, guttering and downpipe at the start rather than matching to what is already up.
Fascia brackets are normally fixed at 800mm to 1000mm centres, closer where snow load is likely, with a bracket within 150mm of every union, angle and outlet. Set a fall of roughly 1:600 towards the outlet, about 3mm per metre, so water runs off rather than standing in the bottom of the gutter.
