Underground Drainage

Underground drainage carries foul and surface water from a building out to the sewer or a soakaway. Drainage pipes run in 110mm and 160mm at 3m and 6m, with bends, junctions, gullies and 470mm chambers to build a system that can still be rodded. Most house runs use 110mm pipe throughout.

Choosing Underground Drainage

Foul and surface water

Underground drainage carries both, but not always in the same pipe. On a combined system they share a run to the sewer; on a separate system surface water goes to a soakaway or a surface water drain and must not join the foul. Establish which you are on before connecting anything new.

Building it so it can be maintained

An inspection chamber at every junction and change of direction, two 45 degree bends rather than one 90, an even granular bed under the pipe, and a consistent fall. A run built without those is a run that gets dug up.

Sizes

110mm and 160mm at 3m and 6m, with bends, junctions, gullies and 470mm chambers. Most house runs are 110mm throughout. Depths and falls fall under the Building Regulations.
